New Beginnings at The Heart of AN

This past week brought us many adjustments and New Beginnings. Our new Dog of AN, Manzana, is such a joy. She is becoming more relaxed and at home each day. For her first week here, she was like Emanaku’s shadow and followed him everywhere. Now, she is finally becoming more independent. The cats are still cautious around her, but a few days ago, Luna and Manzana actually touched noses. So all is progressing well….

Our new guardian / gardener Eloy arrived last Thursday and immediately leapt into action. The compost that we began a few months ago was finished in record time. Justo was reinvigorated by Eloy’s presence and did more work last week than he had in several months. Even so, Justo will be leaving us at the end of the month since we can’t afford to pay two workers.

German was supposed to come last Monday and begin work on the wall in front of AN•Tika, as well as build some river rock paths around the sides of our house, but he didn’t show up. He says that he might arrive next Monday. It seems that he took another job to fill last week’s gap when we weren’t ready to begin since we were welcoming Manzana. This is how it is here. When someone is available to work, you have to grab the moment or they will find another job. But we will wait for German since he is a master of river rock and hope that he comes soon.

Our dining room table is still disassembled. Our first attempts to find a solution haven’t been successful. We have four brackets for the glass table legs, but they don’t sell the width of glass we need in Peru. They also don’t sell brackets for the width of glass that is available here. Next, we will go to a metal worker and see if they can make brackets. If they can’t, then we will look for a table leg solution with wood, rather than glass. In the meanwhile, we are eating our meals in the art studio.

Last Saturday, there was a meeting of the canal association at the bottom of our road at 5:00 in the morning. (This seems to be a favorite time for important meetings here.) Emanaku, Eloy, Justo and Manzana arrived at 5:30 and no one was there yet. Around 6:00 am, people started arriving. Then the meeting was moved from the oficina to the house of the secretary of the acequia association, about 1/2 a kilometer away. The secretary was a very nice and knowledgable gentleman who is directly descended from the Inka Huayna Capac.

On the way back, they encountered a meeting of neighbors who will be affected by the new electricity lines that are going to be installed in this small valley. The plan is to put electricity all the way to the mountain village of Cancha Cancha which is a four hours walk from here. Since there is no road to Cancha Cancha, the people might have to carry the electricity poles by hand.

On Monday, Emanaku went to yet another meeting. This one was with a satellite company from Cuzco and our neighbors who want better quality internet service. All of this is possible, but first we need three more people willing to sign up for the service.

As you can see, much is going on here. These are just some of the details of what we are dealing with on a daily basis. And this is just on a local basis. We can feel all that is happening in the world and with those whom we know and love. Sometimes, it’s an overload of input and emotions. We do our utmost to stay in the eye of the storm. As many of you are, we are just surfing through lots and lots of waves while anchoring the New Reality with our whole hearts. Sometimes, it’s an overload of input and emotions. We do our utmost to stay in the eye of the storm. We are just surfing through lots and lots of waves while anchoring the New Reality with our whole hearts. And we know that many of you are doing the same! ♥
